"The State & Federal Government need to make a significant investment to address some of South Jerseys' major environmental issues"

Issues
The Counties of Southern New Jersey face a myriad of environmental issues, some of
which are similar to the northern & central counties & some of which are unique to only
the southern counties. The Southern counties of New Jersey face problems of poor air
quality & high concentrations of polluting facilities, with facilities that have violated clean
air standards because of poor enforcement practices & minimal fines from the Federal,
State & Local Government Agencies. The City of Camden, for example, has perhaps the
highest concentration of polluting facilities & contaminated sites of any New Jersey city of
its size. South Jersey also has the dubious distinction of serving as host to the oldest &
most problematic nuclear power facility in the State. There are also specific conservation
& environmental issues associated with the Pinelands, Shore communities & Farmlands.
Moreover, South Jersey counties as a whole are unequally represented in the balance of
political power at the State level, which in turn affects our ability to address
environmental issues at the legislative level & because we receive less funding than the
northern communities do, our Legislators have not made environmental issues with South
Jersey their cause & continue to neglect their duties to the people that voted them into
office.
